Man sets up collect call phone number because of annoying telemarketing calls

United States

This is a few years old and maybe the man doesn't have that same number now, but he set up one such number and gave it to any business that needed his details. Why? Because he was tired of telemarketing calls. I thought that was rather a funny idea! He earned around 8 Pence per call. Pence as in the UK currency, and not the US VP. I know a few people here who would just LOVE to have one of these set up.
A Leeds man is turning cold calls into profit by making marketing companies use his higher-rate line.

I used to get a lot of them but I don't so much anymore. Maybe once or twice a month now.

@gr8nana6 Yes! I used to get the car ones all the time. It stopped dramatically once I got rid of the non-car insurance I was paying while I had attempted to get my license.

@ScribbledAdNauseum OMG I get them at least 10 times a day, drives me nuts. I stopped answering and then they leave a voice mail. either nothing on it or about car warranty expiring I don't own a car or some stupid stuff. Just enough to p*** me off

Yes, perhaps then the telemarketers will stop. It's more than telemarketers now though. It's people who pose as government agencies here.

@ScribbledAdNauseum I hate these callers so much. And sometimes I scold them badly on phone for disturbing me.

@Hannihar People use cellphones now, I am not sure if you could set up a collect call number with a cellphone.

Right. Rake in the pennies! Of course it only works if you can keep them on the line. I know of one lotter here who would have fun with this.

@Butterfingers Ah yes, there are still those. Now our phones tell us "Scam likely" so we know not to answer.

I don't know how profitable it would be now. I don't get very many telemarketing calls anymore.

Very cool article. I love the idea of being able to make money off of telemarketers.

That is a really cool idea. I was thinking of doing that as well but thought that it was way too childish to do so.

Right, and I don't know how easy it would be to do so anymore.

Right, but I'm thinking it wouldn't work anymore. Most people use cellphones nowadays.
