I Thought Smoke Detectors Were Supposed to Detect Smoke

We have lived in this house 24 years now. Wow! 24 years this month. A couple of years back our smoke detectors were beeping. I looked at them and there are expiry dates on them. They're only supposed to be good for 10 years, then they should be replaced. So I bought two new smoke detectors. They are located at entry level just outside the family room and next door bathroom, and on the bedroom level where there are 3 bedrooms and a main bathroom.
The problem is, the smoke detector upstairs goes off after anyone has a shower. The STEAM from the bathroom sets of the SMOKE detector. I thought they were just to detect smoke, not steam. We have to open the bathroom window, put the fan on and close the bathroom door for awhile until all the steam clears.
Has this happened to anyone else? I really thought smoke detectors were to detect smoke, not steam.

@BarBaraPrz They are only good for 10 years. There should be a date on them when they should be replaced.

@patgalca I don't think so. It was hardwired in, anyway.

I have not heard about that happening before. I too thought they only detected smoke.

@patgalca I looked online and it said that the detectors can pick up steam as well

@RasmaSandra Thanks for that. I just don't understand why it's happening with this smoke detector but it didn't happen with the previous one.

Now that you mention it we have always had a smoke detector outside of our bathroom in all of the homes that we have lived in over the years. We have never had it sound from just regular steam.
I would think that you should change the batteries just to err on the side of caution.
