Studies matter in life because these are the things that make us a sensible person. That does not mean uneducated people are not sensible but an educated person is looked at with respect but that doesn't a non educated is not looked at with respect, sorry 
But education is taken as a measure to know if the person is good for a job or not.

Finally you managed to come on the right track with your last paragraph I was a good student except that I struggled with Math in the middle school years. After that I got some good friends whom I consider as godsend for me because it was they who helped me with Maths and from then on, I started doing very well in Math too.
