Pets are family.

Scientifically speaking, animals have very interesting thoughts. The only problem is that they don't have many gestures to convey them to humans. So what do I think dogs think, I guess, I'd go with science, something interesting. Now, because they think, they might be sometimes in a deep thinking process, and bothering them would be rude.

They are quite smart fellows and we can not undermine their deep thinking

I do not have a pet but maybe sometime in the future I might plan on having one. But yes even they have feelings and emotions so I do believe sometimes they get lost in thinking while they stare at you. :)
