Day 354
Promise 433
Matthew 6:5 And when you pray, thou shalt not be as the hypocrites are: for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward.
6 But you, when you pray, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which sees in secret shall reward thee openly.
7 But when ye pray, use not vain repetitions, as the heathen do: for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking.
8 Be not ye, therefore, like unto them: for your Father knows what things ye have need of, before ye ask him.
People pray for many reasons. Everyone has needs, they want God to answer.
Jesus told the people they weren’t to make a public display when they prayed, but they were to make it private, a matter between them and God alone. When they did, God would hear them.
He told the people God didn’t want them to be hypocritical and pray long-winded prayers which took the focus off God and what He could do for them. They were familiar with the prayers of the Pharisees. It was common to see them standing on street corners and praying long, seemingly spiritual prayers. Instead, they were to pray in secret to take the temptation away from public displays and put the focus on God where it belonged.
What are your needs? Take it to God and He will answer.

Let’s pray: Father, You know my needs. Help me seek You in the privacy of my prayer closet and not make a public display that doesn’t honor You. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.
