Day 362 Promise 441 Matthew 7:12 Therefore all things whatsoever ye would that men should do to you, do ye even so to them: for this is the law and the prophets. (KJV) Many people know this as ‘Do unto others what you would have them do unto you.’ The Golden Rule. They only know it as the Golden Rule and not that it originated in the Bible. The Golden Rule is something ingrained into many of us from the time we’re born. Taught to us by our parents and grandparents. However, I don’t see much of it displayed today. Jesus told the people they were to treat everyone the same as they wanted to be treated. That especially meant their enemies. Earlier He told them they were to love their enemies. Matthew 5:43 Ye have heard that it hath been said, Thou shalt love thy neighbor, and hate thine enemy. 44 But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them who curse you, do good to them who hate you, and pray for them who despitefully use you, and persecute you; 45 That ye may be the children of your Father which is in heaven: for he makes his sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust. 46 For if ye love them which love you, what reward have ye? Do not even the publicans the same? 47 And if ye salute your brethren only, what do ye more than others? Do not even the publicans so? 48 Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect. As Christians, you are to love everyone. No exceptions. Note, I said love, not like. You are not commanded to like everyone. You can love those you don’t like. It’s difficult, but it can be done. John the apostle also told people they needed to love everyone. It was a mark of being a Christian. 1 John 2:7 Brethren, I write no new commandment unto you, but an old commandment which ye had from the beginning. The old commandment is the word which ye have heard from the beginning. 8 Again, a new commandment I write unto you, which thing is true in him and in you: because the darkness is past, and the true light now shines. 9 He who says he is in the light, and hates his brother, is in darkness even until now. 10 He who loves his brother abides in the light, and there is none occasion of stumbling in him. 11 But he who hates his brother is in darkness, and walks in darkness, and knows not whither he goes, because the darkness hath blinded his eyes. You can’t say you love God while you hate your neighbor. Therefore, you are to treat all men the way you want to be treated, with love and respect. In that way you show the love of the Father. Let’s pray: Father, help me love the unlovable, even as You love all people. Help me treat everyone the way I want to be treated, with love and respect. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.
