Approximately, 19 % of teen-agers suffer from depression at some point in their lives. Those with depression usually feel hopeless and unworthy, and they are often incapable of living a normal life. It was reported that, depression is one of the main causes of suicide in adolescents. Almost everyone knows a story or two of a teen-ager who committed or tried to commit suicide. It's really sad to lose young and promising boys and girls to this devil called depression. To prevent such sad occurrences, it's good to know and be able to recognise the symptoms of depression in adolescents... Symptoms of depression in teen-agers include, but not limited to; Loss of interest in school work and poor GPA. Isolation. Persistent sadness. Irritability. Alcohol and drug abuse. The severity of these symptoms vary from one teen to another, and so is the modes of treatment.

I lost my 16 y/o with no warning signs. Even though it is good to know the "signs", you don't always get them. This issue should not be bundled together as a one size fits all. Each situation is different.

@Mbenieve yes I believe at education centres the very first hour they should be told value of life and motivate them to do nothing but at least take care of them selves

That's true. Even teachers and educators should be alert.

@abhinalstrikr I totally agree with you. Motivation is key because most of them usually feel hopeless and unworthy.

So many things are responsible but the main reason is the lack of ability to accept failures and compromises

Sad to realise that this really happens to teenagers. Even for normal people, teenage life I think is one of the confusing/challenging periods and it can get more difficult than that for some.

@Mbenieve yes we all seem to experience some difficulties with identity, fitting in, and other issue. being so young it is easier to get overwhelmed by the world and circumstances in life.

It's very crucial for parents of teenagers to be on the lookout for these indicators given the magnitude of threat posed by the internet. It could be as much a bane as it is a boon.

Yeah, parents should be on the lookout for any changes in behaviour. We tend to think that raising a toddler is difficult, but teenage is a more challenging stage.

@Mbenieve Oh yes, absolutely! I totally agree with you there. Toddler stage is like a fledgling inside the nest. It might involve more of physical work but it's just between the kid and the parents. Adolescence is like getting wings and wanting to fly when they have no clue about the dangers of the real world. It's mentally very exhausting to stay on the balance between being a good friend and a watchful parent.

@Miracle_Maya I wouldn't agree more. Every parent should just prepare adequately for this stage.
