'Running. That’s all I do is run through the forest. I don’t know if I’m running towards something or away. I can feel my heart beat pounding in my chest. It feels like it’s ready to burst out at any moment. The moon is full above me, lighting my way to a place unknown. The air is dead, there’s not even the slightest stirring of air though I know my feet should be kicking up dust. I can smell just a hint of water, as if a small lake or river were miles away and it wants to make it’s presence known. I just have to keep running, no matter the fact that I’m running on fumes. My breath ragged and getting thinner with every step, yet I know that if I stop, my life will be over. Good or bad as the past ten years have been, I’m not ready for it to be over yet.
There’s a shadowy figure up ahead, in the shape of a man. Maybe he is who I am running to, maybe he’s there to help me. If only I could get to him and find out. I know he’s not there to save me, I can save myself. Have been for years.
There’s a buzzing sound now. A buzz? In a forest? Maybe it’s from whatever is behind me. I can feel it there but I don’t dare turn to look.
I open my eyes to the damn alarm clock that is now buzzing near my head. One of these days I’ll finish this stupid dream, it’s been making an appearance regularly for going on a month now. Until that time, according to the alarm clock I’m late. Apparently I hit the snooze button on it too many times and now I’ll be late for work. I don’t even remember doing it but I hit the off button and roll over on my back.
Closing my eyes for just a second, I revel in the silence and will my heart rate back to normal. It’s always like this after this dream. Even though the details fade fast, my muscles still feel like I’ve been running and my heart beats as though it still feels fear.
My silence doesn’t last as long as I had hoped it would. It seems like only a few seconds after I had shutoff my alarm, does my phone start ringing out Travis Tritt’s classic “Here’s a Quarter (Call Someone Who Cares)”. My pain in the ass boss must be calling to see if I’m going to make it in. He earned both his nick-name and this ring tone barely even a week into working at his office.
Note to self, it’s not good to not show up or be extremely late when you need a job and it’s definitely a bad idea to do it for three days in a row.
Ignoring it, I push out of bed and make my way to the shower. Just a quick one was my original thought but the hot water on my sore muscles is too heavenly to make myself move fast.
When you add the dream to doing some actual running last night whether I had shifted or not it was hell on me physically. Then to find out that my lead that I went sniffing after last night turned out to be a dead end,I was emotionally drained.
As I dry off, my thoughts keep coming back to what my acquaintance had told me last night.
Changes are coming and I’m not ready for them.
When the person you’re talking to is a psychic, things can be a bit cryptic but this prediction, though pretty general and vague, was specific to me. If I’m being honest with myself, I’m NOT ready for changes of any kind. Things in my life are just starting to settle down and to up heave them again would just be a b*tch.
I just moved here two years ago after finding out the my best friend from my childhood might be here. I’ve been looking for him for ten years now and any lead I can get right now is a bonus. This would be when most would say, it’s a cold case. No new leads and no where to go with past clues. I never gave up on Dean though and I won’t. He would never give up on me…no matter what the last words between us were all those years ago"
I hope you enjoy this peek. I've been working on re-writes on Wattpad so I'm hoping I'm on the right track. I'm pretty sure I'll probably think of another way to change it lol.
