Thankfully the remnants of Hurricane Laura went past us without much trouble. There were severe weather warnings a little south of us, in southern Kentucky and Tennessee, but we didn’t even get all the rain they were forecasting. That’s why you should only trust @DocAndersen ‘s “Yesterday’s Weather Forecast, Today,” which is always 100% accurate! There’s also a 100% chance of me springing another favorite on you from 1980...and here it is!
#3: I Got You - Split Enz
Hey, now, don’t dream! It’s over!!
If you remember that classic from Crowded House, this isn’t it.
However, this is where Crowded House got its start: as Split Enz.
You see, Australia is much more than AC/DC and Olivia-Newton John!
Split Enz (disclaimer: originally from New Zealand, but they moved to Australia when they became popular) had a short but great career in the power pop/new wave era.
The remnants of this band can be found all over the place: Tim Finn, brother of founder Neil Finn, went on to found the band Crowded House (hence, the “Don’t Dream, It’s Over” reference). Neil Finn is one of two guitarists picked to replace Lindsey Buckingham when he was fired from Fleetwood Mac (that’s right, Buckingham is such a good guitarist it took two people to replace him).
This was Split Enz’ biggest hit, topping the charts in Australia and New Zealand, and their only charted song in the US. It’s a favorite of mine from the era of new wave taking over from punk.
