Hurricane Sally. I had to wonder how it took this long to name a hurricane Sally, given all the songs in this world that have that name in the title (and even more in the lyrics: “Sally take my hand” in “Baba O’Riley”). So, I’ll give you ten favorite songs that have “Sally” in the title. Here’s the first.
#10: Sally Can’t Dance - Lou Reed
Yes, folks, Lou Reed did record more than “Walk on the Wild Side.”
In fact, 1974’s album Sally Can’t Dance gave Reed another song that became famous to a degree: people started playing “Ride Sally Ride” when Sally Ride became the first woman on an American space mission (in 1983). No, Lou didn’t do that just for Sally Ride’s benefit. She was still in college when he did this album.
As for this song, it’s hardly a cheery, upbeat tune. It’s a look at the destitutIon that can be the brutal reality of many individual’s lives: rape, drug abuse, faded career, and all the other things that will bring people to rock bottom.
A song not for the squeamish. Then again, life isn’t for the squeamish, either.
