Harvest time in California!

I have three (count them--three!) balcony green beans waiting for me to harvest. I may just gobble them up off the vine. Or I may save them and add them to my Thai curry when I get some later in the day. The photo is from a couple of Summers ago when the kids at the (Berkeley) preschool and I planted and harvested green beans. Can you tell the kids were pleased? I think a garden should be a part of ANY preschool, Kindergarten, or elementary school curriculum. Your thoughts?

Get ‘em growing pot early!
Yes, I think it’s a great idea to get kids’ hands dirty — literally — with planting. Gives them a good exposure to science!

These kids are super excited about their harvest of string beans In school, we planted beans, which were watered inside paper cups, in the window sill. Those first green sprouts were pretty exciting!

@kobesbuddy If I ever start my own school or preschool, I'm going to make sure that we can we can have a garden there. It's one of my main "things."

@TheHorse No, we were in a classroom on the third floor of the elementary school. The only earth was a gravel play-ground with various equipment and a small front yard.

They were a delight to work with. And working at the preschool was actually "self-reward" for me, as I'd worked with "poor" kids for so many years. These kids were the progeny of Ph.D.s, Cal post-docs from Israel, computer programmers, etc.

I may still have a couple yellow beans on the vine but it's been raining all day, so I haven't checked. Also a few raspberries.

@TheHorse I went out at 8am and picked 4 yellow beans and pulled 2 carrots. When I came inside to wash the carrots, I only had 3 beans. I checked a couple times but couldn't find that missing 4th bean.

@TheHorse The schools here it would not work too well because of the growing season. But preschools could do it.

i 'gree with ya, particularly since so many 'dults do not've a clue how to grow anythin' edible these days. ya got 3?? we'd 5 total here 'n did jest eat 'em straight off the vine. the grasshoppers decimated my green bean crop this year 'xcept fer one lil plant that came'p 'mong the bell peppers. they munched such, but somehow didn't kill 't. basil. gonna plant lots 'f basil all o'er next year.

@TheHorse the hubs would'a been more'n happen to poison 'em. i used to use nolo bait - 'twas specific to grasshoppers'n crickets, no harm to all others nor the critters that ate said grasshoppers. this spring/summer there 'twas none to be found.
we're to've a drier'n warmer winter'n the norm ('gain) so jest get'cha a bag packed'n plan'n a road trip this way come june, k? ya can join the critters'n such a battle.

@LindaOHio For kids, it's not about having huge sunflowers. It's about knowing they've helped grow something.

@jvicentevalera If you see a cute bunny out there, wearing glasses and talking psychology and physics, you'll know it's one of mine.

I think so too! My kids were fortunate to have some kind of gardening in their classes . . . I love those kinds of lessons outside of academics. Since the kids are now home with online schooling, we've had the time to do our own gardening in the yard. It really is exciting to see a seed grow into something !

@thislittlepennyearns I like to let kids "help" with cooking as well.

@TheHorse The same goes with cooking. I am all about getting the kids in the kitchen to help me cook or do simple recipes with supervision.
If I didn't work two jobs and have to be fill in caregiver right now, I would of homeschooled them this year.
