Of the twelve apostles, why do you think John did not die a martyr?

His brother James was first to die with a blade severing his neck. An apostle. A martyr. And all the rest of our Lord's magnificent apostles did meet horrible fates. The leader, Simon Peter was crucified upside down. He requested it, because he felt unworthy to die like our Lord. But John had the blessing of longevity. He was even able to pen Revelation from prison. Why do you think John lived so long?

The Lord must have had a reason to keep John on earth so long,

What could the reason be?

Possibly. But the prophecy could have been written by another apostle or disciple, why John?

@eileenleyva God has a specific plan for every one of us, and that was his plan for John.

@sharonelton That is a given. Man is also given free will. Man's actuation is his own. Twelve apostles were chosen, why was John the only one not a martyr?

We can't know for sure but it seems that God had a special assignment for him to keep on building the congregation of God's people as the letters that he wrote when he may have been almost 100 years old show.

@kanuck1 That dialogue between Peter and our Lord was in reference to Peter's martyrdom, and suggests that John will not die a martyr. Perhaps it would help if we study why John is called Beloved.

@eileenleyva "Jesus answered, “Maybe I want him to live until I come. That should not matter to you. You follow me!” John 21:22 (Easy-to-Read Version) Jesus told that to Peter and I'll have to also accept that explanation.

@eileenleyva Jesus said “Maybe I want him to live until I come." When do you think that was? Can you share the verses where he is called the beloved as I want to read them. Yes, I could look them up but maybe you have them handy?
