Dreams

I read that the average person forgets up to 95% of their dreams shortly after they wake up. This isn't the case for me. I'm not sure why, but I'm a daily dreamer. My dreams are always very vivid, so it's easy for me to remember my dreams. I am able to tell you about dreams/nightmares that I had when I was as young as 3 years old. I doubt that I forget anywhere close to 95% of my dreams. My dreams are always like very, very long movies, and I remember them from start to finish. Perhaps this is why I have trouble remembering real movies? No idea. Does anyone else remember their dreams like I do? I'd love to hear about other people's experiences!

I often dream and I often remember it too as soon as I wake up. I like telling it to my family once I wake up (especially if it's a bad dream or a very good one) because sometimes I would forget if I don't share it.

The only way to really remember dreams is to keep a Dream Diary and to write them down the instant you wake up. Perhaps, in your case, that might take quite a long time! I do remember one very vivid dream from my childhood (it was a dream about a Paradise garden and was so beautiful and rich in colours that I long wanted to go back there but, somehow, never managed to). There are a few other quite vivid dreams from which I remember a few details but mostly they have faded over time and are lost. It used to be thought that dreams only occur with Rapid Eye Movement (periods when one is not deeply asleep, though still not awake), however, research done at Aalto University in 2016 suggests that some people (about half of those tested) may also dream when there is no REM and they are in a deeper sleep. Even long and very involved dreams probably actually take just a minute or two to experience.

@m1dn1ghts0ul I've often wondered about that, too, but I suppose that, just as one can think of and comprehend very complicated ideas in a flash, it's the working out of the process and ramifications (and putting the idea into words) that takes time, so I wonder whether it's like that with dreams, which are, after all, a function of memory.

That was very informative. Thank you! Hmm, so maybe my long dreams that I remember are actually only a few minutes in reality? They seem so long. A lot longer than a movie. I remember details, all the way down to the buttons on a stranger's jacket. I remember details of faces of those whom I've never interacted with in real life, but probably have walk by them. I remember the colours of the sky, buildings, and a lot more. I wonder if it really does only take a couple of minutes to dream all of this?

My dream sometimes revolves around the same area. Maybe there's a country in my dream, so they're going to the same place sometimes. But that's absurd Most of the times I would forget whatever I was dreaming. I only remember a few. Probably due to the storyline. Whether too exciting or too shocking.

Hmm, that's interesting! Thanks for sharing that. As for me, I remember my dreams even if they're boring. Some of my dreams are just like any normal day. Sometimes it gets confusing because I can dream about driving to work and sitting in the office. Then, my brain thinks that it happened in real life because of how normal the dream was.

My medication keeps me from dreaming most of the time. When I do dream, I may remember a little when I first wake up but eventually I won't remember much as the day goes on.

Lol! Well, I probably remember my dreams better than I remember anything else in real life. So, I guess I have selective memory? Not sure what to call it.
