@Babale Here, we have so many different religions. The first people to arrive wanted religious freedom. It grew from that.
I'd love to visit Indonesia one day. My son loved it and said that the people were so nice. He still tests back and forth with a friend he made there.

@DianneN - I have also heard nice things said about Indonesia. Several years back a friend went on a government assignment to Indonesia and ended up bringing back a wife!

I believe that our technology got its start in the push to develop a means to stop the Axis powers during world war II. Would we all be still at war without the US? I doubt it. More likely the Axis powers (Germany, Italy, Japan), or maybe Stalin would have prevailed. The US did not save the world by itself, but it was able to bring in the extra manpower and our manufacturing abilities to provide the extra kick that brought their downfall.
Technology today is driven by so many things, countries wanting to have an edge over rivals, the greed of the people who own the companies, and many people wondering "What if,"
It amazes me that when I grew up, computers were monster machines that took up entire floors of office buildings but had less computational power than our present-day cell phones. Back in the 1960s, many scientists believed that the common person had no need or wish to own a personal computer. Now, anyone who doesn't have some sort of personal computing device is at a distinct disadvantage.

@tallawah You will find no argument here. The US has ceased to be the world leader it once was. I would love to see our leadership role return, but for now, greed, partisanship, and infighting have taken a toll. I just hope that the leaders, whoever they are going forward will be able to bring the people of this country back together. I pray it does not take a war or some other major catastrophe to get us there.

@tallawah And I do understand that. I did not vote for the man that is in charge right now, neither this time nor the time before. But, he is who we have like it or not. (I do not and at least half of America is right there with me. Thus why this most recent election has not been called for one side or the other.)
Besides, from what I remember from traveling outside the US, American Products seem very expensive in comparison to others. By the way, I have been to Jamacia; Montego Bay, and Georgetown. It was several decades ago, But we enjoyed our visit very much.

That's an interesting question that you ask. Here is what is interesting about it. I think you would be hard-pressed to find an American who would ask why another country exists or "was born". Sure! There are a lot of countries that don't like US. But I don't think I ever heard an American ask "Why does this country exist?" The question I always ask is "If we're so awful, why are people literally dying to cross the border to get here?" It's a valid question. God Bless America.
