If you are of a certain age the original Stephen King miniseries IT was one of the scariest of the 1990s. For some reason clowns offer equal joy as they do fear and despair to other people. My hometown of Northampton made international news when some anonymous guy dressed up as a clown in the winter and scared the hell out of people coming home from work and play. I have no problem with clowns but the Stephen King movie did freak me out back in the day, Pennywise a cinema horror icon. But would a film sequel work some 30-years later?

===Plot====
The young kids that had to try and kill the supernatural clown or be killed by it back in 1988 are all grown up with their own busy lives. But mysterious visions of those events have revisited them and they have all been drawn to a Chinese restaurant for an unexpected reunion. After a few drinks and recollections they realize they may have to face Pennywise (Bill Skarsgård) once again to carry on with their lives.

So was IT a hit? Oh yes, the $35 million budget generating an impressive $701 million to date to make it the most successful box office horror film of all time. But was it any good though? Well for me it was very average, I was not unnerved at any point and disappointed it turned out to be yet another generic cheap thrills horror film. I really expected more.
One of the advantages of the miniseries is it didn’t not have the box of tricks called CGI and so concentrated on the basics to build tension and drama. Here the director Andy Muschietti starts adding special effects stuff that does not need to be in the movie, some of it cringingly so around the various apparitions that are not related to the clown or the kids and mere fillers to drag the movie out so cinemas could sell more popcorn and soda.
The whole reason the film IT worked back in the day was because of the simplistic evil and menace of the clown around kids. Putting the adults up against it just didn’t really work. Pedophilia is always the underlying menace of this type of horror movie but only touched on in small way here. It just seemed to be a movie made for the sake of it to cash in on the nostalgia of the classic King horror era than bring anything new or original to the genre. What a letdown.

@thedevilinme I'm a fan of Stephen King. I've yet to watch even more of his movies and hopefully read his books but yep, I've definitely seen IT. The original with Tim Curry and the remake. I actually enjoyed the remake too.
But that clown.... To me was more scary than the original Pennywise.

@thedevilinme I never knew of a remake for that movie. But yeah I do agree that some classics were better left untouched.

I have not seen this new version but I really love the old one where I know all the actors,
