A Call for Indentured Servitude to Your Gov...

November 17, 2020 7:39am CST
In the first breath, Anthony Scaramucci calls for UBI. Fantastic! Then, he puts his foot in his mouth to call for indentured servitude to the government. Anyone else's blood start to steam at this one? Tying the concept of UBI with indentured servitude of any kind is a slippery slope. https://twitter.com/Scaramucci/status/1328421553361522693

What is UBI? Indentured servitude? Is it contractual kind of government service?

UBI = Universal Basic Income. Indentured servitude means you are bound by contract to work to pay off a debt. In this case, this person is saying that if people want their student loans forgiven by the government, they would need to work for a while to get it. Once the debt is paid, you can stop working for them.

I like the idea of students getting help for high loans and willing to consider different ways of doing this. I don't equate community service as a form of paying back assistance as "indentured servitude". I also don't consider Scaramucci as an authority on much of anything.

Spot on about Scaramucci. But, what he described is the literal definition of indentured servitude. "a person who signs and is bound by indentures to work for another for a specified time especially in return for payment of travel expenses and maintenance" An indenture is: "bind (someone) by an indenture as an apprentice or laborer." Such high debt would be considered a form of maintenance because so many bad things can happen if it is not paid back. Now, they could choose not to work it off, let it default and just suffer through wage/tax refund garnishments. When you get down to it, we're all under various forms of indentured servitude.
