Can they stay peacefully?

Hello everybody
I would kindly like you people to help me here.
I have a pet(Dog) at home that we have been together for 4 years now and recently I have been developing a feeling that I should get a Cat too and bring it home.
But there is something that tells me that these pets(Cat and Dog) won't stay or live peacefully. And now am really confuse.
Is there anyone keeping both of those pets at home? if yes how do they mingle with each other?
Should I go ahead and bring the cat? 
Somebody please help me here.

I am allergic to cats and never had them. But when I was young we had three dogs together. They were jealous like any siblings would be
but they went well together. 
I have seen videos of cats and dogs pets going great and friendly together.
