Certificate – 18 Country – U.S.A Awards – 1 Win & 12 Nominations = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = As most of us in the cold countries are suffering lockdown once again we have turned to streaming TV to try and get through it once again, sport, movies and TV series helping to beat the boredom. The next big budget TV series made by Amazon Prime TV I have enjoyed is season one of The Boys, DCs outrageous anti superhero romp where the hero’s are villains and the villains are heroes, and villains, and just about everything in-between. For those who haven’t read the comics the basic set up is a corporation called Vought Inc, who markets and monetizes the superhero team called ‘The Seven’, and for extreme profit, saving people from disaster with their superpowers their main job but their downtime they can do what the hell they want with those superpowers, which is not pretty, as equally reckless on the job as off. ===Cast=== = The Boys = Hughie – Jack Quaid Butcher – Karl Urban Milk – Laz Alonso Frenchie – Tomer Capon Female – Karen Fukhura =The Seven = Homelander – Antony Star Starlight – Erin Moriarty Queen Maeve - Dominique McEligott A-Train – Jessie T Usher The Deep – Chace Crawford Black Noir – Nathan Mitchell Translucent – Alex Hassell Elizabeth Shue – Madelyn Stillwell ===Plot==== An everyday guy, Hughie Campbell (Jack Quaid), suffers a horrendous tragedy/accident at the hands of The Seven. Vought Inc’s Chief Executive, Madelyn Stillwell (Elizabeth Shue), tries to buy him off with a payout and a public apology but Hughie is not having it, distraught and angry. Superhero Translucent is sent to ‘persuade him’ to take the cheque and move on. So enter Billy Butcher (Urban), a menacing bearded dude that befriends Hughie and offers him the chance of revenge against the superheroes and The Vought Corporation. Butcher has also suffered at the hands of them and also out for revenge. Hughie is soon extracted from his boring life and grief as he teams up with Butcher and his mates, weapons man Milk (Laz Alonso) and electronics specialist Frenchie (Tomer Capon), to expose The Seven. They are no match for the superpowers but resourceful in other ways, Butcher ex C.I.A. and connected. But there is hope for The Seven in the shape of Annie January (Erin Moriarty),’Starlight’, a new young and wholesome superhero who has joined the team. But on her first day she is assaulted by one of the male Seven, ‘The Deep’ (Chace Crawford), not exactly the dream job she was hoping for. The team leader is the arrogant Homelander (Antony Star) and only fellow female superhero Queen Maeve (Dominique McEligott), once a feminist idealist like Starlight but now cold and cynical after too long in The Seven, her only friend. Things are complicated with a chance meeting between Annie and Hughie, both oblivious to each other’s roles and identities as love blossoms. Stillwell and Vought next mission for The Seven is to conspire to receive government support for superheroes, effectively getting them into the armed forces, probably not a good idea for the world. ===Results=== Its good fun and a refreshingly topical idea of superheroes run for profit in this social media world. It’s not that suitable for kids as some pretty gruesome schlock horror killings though. It’s been seen as sexist and slightly racist at times but pretty much everything is in these woke times. Karl Urban is surprisingly good as the badass antihero and looks perfect for the role. The square jawed and ripped superheroes deliberately ham it up to allow the Boys to express the few morals this show has. It touches on some pressing issues of the day. It’s funny and action packed and clever at times. In fact it’s very smart for anything superhero. Season Two has been and gone and season three in production so a good few episodes yet to enjoy for new starters like me. This very much one to watch if you are out of ideas on your next box-set for your next lockdown. ===RATINGS=== Imdb.com 8.7/10.0 (232,123votes) Rottentomatos.com –84% critic’s approval Metacritic.com – critic’s approval ===Trailer=== https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=06rueu_fh30
