Why is writing so hard?

I always have a hard time getting back into the flow of writing. Especially when I have been away from it for a while. I am trying to make goals for myself in writing, like write until my laptop dies. I love coming on here to get back into the flow of things and come up with more ideas. There used to be a writing website I would use that had a section for writers block where these prompts would come up with topics to write about. Do you have a hard time getting back into the swing of things? If so, how do you combat it?

I have found the book Save the Cat Writes a Novel extremely helpful, if you go to Jessica Brody’s website she’ll send you the starter kit, for the beat sheets

One of my friends found a writing prompts book at Target! I will look into Jessica Brody's website. Thank you for the information.

That website sounds cool, with the writing prompts. Ah , yes. As for writing on here... (You can laugh at me) - I keep a list. Sometimes I get super inspired and think of , like, a dozen things that would make good topics here. Other times, like now, I'm hard pressed to think of discussion content. So, off to my list I will go. Hope that helps

I am the same way. I get so many ideas and try to roll with them. Today has been a pretty successful day in writing. I was even able to get a piece done for my page on Vocal.media :-)

I used to write for several sites and the only constraint I have now is the lack of time. It is normal to experience writer's block but with constant practice, we can always create a good content.

I used to write for Zemandi and they would give me the topic. It made things a little easier. I am trying to get back into writing for vocal. I miss it. But I have to come up with the ideas. I actually wrote an article about writers block, haha.

@star_disgate I used to write about Artificial intelligence but unfortunately the site decided to stop paying members. So I stopped writing long contents but still participate in forums from time to time. I want to create my own blog and YT channel but it would depends on my time.

There is nothing worse than a writer's block, I guess aside from having lots of writing ideas but cannot find the words to make it into paper/any writing platform. I have experienced both, still do. Usually I give myself time so I will not get stressed out. Then I always keep a small notebook with me, I write down words that remind me of how I feel or my experience pertaining to something that I am planning to write about. Then I look back to it and see how I can incorporate these feelings or thoughts into my writing.

I think my issue is too many ideas. I don't know where to start.

I have a bit of a problem writing when i have too many things on my mind. I write when the ideas start flowing. I found that i cannot force the ideas I have to sit back and do other things. If i just let my mind wander i generally come up with ideas so i keep a notebook and pencil at hand.

Keeping those things on hand is a good idea. I feel like when I get stuck at it, looking at other peoples writing helps a bit. It gives me new ideas.

@star_disgate It does tend to give you ideas when you read other's writing.

What are you trying to write? Fact or fiction? I do both - writing factual pieces on my blogs and stories for the writing group to which I belong. In both types of writing, I find that plucking an idea from anywhere - a newspaper article, a random thought, a dream, or whatever - then simply putting a few words down on the screen, is often a good start. You can then expand or change what you have, develop a few thoughts and - hey presto - you have the beginning of something that looks remarkably like a piece of writing! I have recently started to use speech transmission software, so I talk to a microphone and my words appear on the screen. I can therefore spout any amount of rubbish but produce something that I can adapt and expand with a bit more thought. If it goes nowhere, I simply scrap it and try something else. In all cases, it is the idea that matters - the rest is just mechanical if you are any good at all as a writer!

My go-to writing site is writing.com You earn virtual badges and gift points (GPs). It's a great (free) community of folks who want to encourage each other in their writing skills.

I think one day you can make it. Perhaps, you have just another concentration for the moment.

Sometimes it is difficult to know what to write about, especially when we cannot go out and do things. There is nothing to talk about either when nobody is going anywhere.
