The power of myth

Recent events have driven me to wax poetical:
Mythology
The Ancient Greeks believed the Sun
Shone thanks to Phoebus’ daily run,
For should his carriage not take flight
The world would dwell in endless night.
Another cause? They all would say,
“You cannot take our myth away.”
The god to whom I bow down low
Has said all other gods must go.
In times gone by you’d die in flames
For paying court to heathen claims.
Their faiths are myths but mine is true
What do you mean – mine could be too?
Is global warming caused by us?
Not so – no need to make a fuss.
Ever since this planet formed
The world has cooled once it has warmed.
Your “proof” I just refuse to see
The myth is good enough for me.
This virus thing? A load of lies
For hardly anybody dies.
We’d never miss the few that do,
Unless, of course, they number you.
Fake news, dismiss the scare forthwith,
I tell you straight – it’s all a myth.
I’d like you guys to please take note
I’m still convinced they stole my vote.
Dead people voted, ballots dumped,
The wrong chap won, my man was trumped.
And yet you say I speak not true?
That it’s a myth I’m sticking to?
Throughout all time mankind has sought
To understand what life has brought
And all have said, “I must be free
To find a truth that’s right for me.
So do not take my myths away
The need for myth is here to stay.”

I indulge from time to time! However, I spend more time on analysing and explaining the poetry of other people, and publishing these pieces on a blog. This was my entry for this week's session of my writing group, which meets online on Friday - the brief was to write a poem of up to 40 lines that could be entered in a national competition that is coming up.

@Fleura Probably. It's a free competition open to groups affiliated to the National Association of Writing Groups, and there are a number of poetry and story categories. I entered most of the categories last year and was runner-up in two of them, so I am hoping to do as well or better this time round!
