An Applicant Passed Gas During The Interview

If there is one thing about our technology that we use for call conferences or video conferences, it is how sensitive they are to pick up sounds. It is very important in order to understand the message, but at this particular interview, the microphone picked up something else. We were on the last leg of a series of interviews of applicants for a certain position that we are trying to fill. Since the site is on another state and with COVID precautions, all interviews were done through Zoom. The second to the last applicant passed gas during the interview, while the Senior Recruiter was speaking. Judging by all our reactions, we all heard it loud and clear. As someone who is prone to giggles, it took everything in me not to laugh. I saw that the applicant's face was red, but the Senior Recruiter was not fazed with his questioning. The rest of us in the panel decided to follow his suit and to keep going. But man, it was hard. I am just glad that I have already asked my questions to the applicant before it happened, otherwise, I will start cracking up. Good thing the interview finished with 6 minutes before the next one will start. As soon as the applicant hung up, the other manager asked if we also heard it. And that's all it took before I burst out laughing. We gave ourselves some time to compose ourselves before proceeding to the next applicant. Well, it happens.

@raine38 This has made my day. Why is this not making the front page of all the papers? I’m going to giggle all day long and especially when I do a zoom call later. Was it a really loud fart? I admire you for refraining from laughing out loud when it happened - such self control! I would have laughed. I might even have said “Excuse me, what was that you said”? I’m still a 10 year old school boy at heart.

It was loud enough, and it is the kind of fart that rumbles, not the kind that is a one toot and done. My apologies if that grosses you out, but it is funny.

@Raine38 You mean the way a horse farts? Once they start they just keep going and when you think they’re done they still manage to squeeze out a little bit more.

What a day . Everybody has the right to be freed with burden. Carrying such load around is too much to bear, it should be shared.

He is probably banking on it not being heard. But it did get transmitted.

It is not. He is actually short-listed as we have another opening coming up in two months. They decided to give the current opening to someone who has more experience, but he is the next one for hiring as the upcoming opening is a more junior role.

What an interview! I am sure it was just an accident. The applicant must be so ashamed of herself/himself.

Yes, and even though I want to tell him that he has nothing to be embarrassed about because things happen, I will end up revealing that we heard it. So he might become more embarrassed.

That could be true too. We're all humans and this is normal biological function.

Poor things must've been very embarrassed. At least you control yourself instead of laughing right there and then. Well, things happens

I do feel bad for him. As much as I want to assure him that it's fine, we can't smell it anyway . But if I did that, then I have to acknowledge that we heard it, and that might embarrass him a bit more.

On the upside, since it's a virtual interview, we DID NOT smell anything.
