I didn't expect this to be such a suspense-filled thriller.

When Solace Island gallery owner Zelia Thompson's close friend Alexus Feinstein of the prestigious art gallery Feinstein & Co. dies of a drug overdose, Zelia's intuition sounds an alarm. The Alexus she knew didn't do drugs and had everything to live for.
As Zelia begins looking into the circumstances of her friend's death, what she uncovers will put her life in imminent danger. Will Zelia - with the help of the reclusive crime-fiction novelist Gabe Conaghan - be able to unravel the mysterious happenings surrounding Alexus's untimely death? Or will she become the bloodthirsty artist's next victim?

This was a romantic suspense with emphasis on suspense. The romantic aspect of the story was a breath of fresh air. Zelia who is still grieving the lost of her husband 8 year later, never had any interest in another man. With her biological clock ticking and the sudden attraction to Gabe, she decides she wants a baby. He is just as attracted to her and agrees to help her. Whether they have a future together as a couple is up in the air.
In the midst of all this there is a possible murder, and another person goes missing, and Zelia's life is in danger. Though their romantic relationship is put on hold at Zelia's request, Gabe remains by her side as an investigator and a protector.
Chapters are short, which I like. They keep me reading when I see only a short chapter next, and another, and another... LOL. But the story still flows. It's not choppy. It is beautifully written and a wonderful, gripping story. I gave it 5 stars.
Hidden Cove is the second book of the Solace Island series. I read the third book (Cliff's Edge). The first is simply called Solace Island. However, these books are definitely stand alone reads.

Did Gabe agree to help her make a baby or just with the investigation? And why do "regular" people in novels feel compelled to solve murders?

She sought out Gabe because he is a writer of crime books. He did agree to make the baby, which was a little swift I thought, but he was no spring chicken and his parents were on his case to give them grandchildren.
Yes, I often wonder that myself about every day people needing to solve mysteries. In this case the police ruled it an overdose and she knew there was no way in heck that was true but the police wouldn't listen to her. It was a little bit more believable sleuthing than some cozies I've read.
