This crime mystery story was first written in 1936 by J.Jefferson Farjeon. It is certainly a story of its time because it is about a group of people who are staying at a country house for the weekend The twelve guests are an assorted crowd of people from different professions including , an artist, an actress and a journalist. There is also a a conman in their midst who has changed his identity and now has a new wife. They say that thirteen is an unlucky number so the head of the household only invited twelve guests originally. However one of the guests rescued a young man who hurt his foot while getting off the train and took him back to the house with her. This meant that there were to be thirteen guests at the house that weekend. It was all going okay until they went stag hunting on the following morning. During the hunt , two bodies were found dead and both were suspected as being murdered. Later there was another body belonging to one of the party found dead. The police were called in and from then on the story becomes about the secrets surrounding the various remaining guests , the hosts and some of their servants. Many of them did have some interesting secrets including the young man who was rescued from the train with a bad foot.

I've not heard of that author but the book sounds Agatha Christie-like.

I have not read any Agatha Christie books myself, but I have seen old films where the subject of the film has been inspired by her novels.

I am glad you liked my review and I hope you enjoy the book if you find it. I brought my copy from Waterstones, if that is any help.

This story would make a good movie , what with all the country house and rich people scandals. The characters would be good to watch in a film too as some were quite eccentric.

Personally, although I don't really like horror books, from today on I will try to read

This is not really a horror story , although parts of it could be described as bit gruesome. It is more of a crime mystery story.
