A while ago i wrote some short stories and never really completed them and now with Covid and the winter weather keeping us all closed up in our homes except for a few trips to the store or to put gas i the car or pay the bills that cant be paid over the internet because the recipitant is adimant that it needs to be paid in cash. I feel now is the time to share with you some stories or pehaps the begining of one . Ill Call it , A sea mans story It was windy , we had just set sail and the seas were as calm as a lake , all you could smell was the wift of salt air as the ship past over another wave. The year was 1912 and the month was April, we had just left Portsmith and our Destination was New York City and we were expected to arrive by April 15th. Captain Smith had been on the boilermans backs to stoke the fires and open up the engines to pusj her to top speed. Andrew Wells who was the captains adivisor said that it was not safe to travel so fast but Captain Smith paid him no heed, Captain Smith was on his last voyage after spending many years aboard navy ships and this ship of all ships was going to be the one to remember. Word had it that the communications cabin had been recieving notifications all day about there being icebergs in the area and that ships should use extreme caution . Captains extreme caution was to put two men into the crows nest instead of one . At around 945 pm a messge came through that all ships should slow down and travel no more than 5 knots but yet again Captain smith chose to ignore the message and continue sending the ship at top speed as he thought having two watchmen in the crows nest should be enough to avoid any problems. A women of gypsie decent was on board the ship , she said she was there to take her last breaths of life as that night God would be collecting her and over 900 others to take them to the ocean floor and the ship they were on. Some children cried in fear at her ramblings , mothers told her that it wasnt true and that this was the safest ship built because the White starline shipping company had said so. Yes if you havent guessed by now the ship we were on was the famous SS Cinatit . The ship that is unsinkable I beleive the words of the designer were. Looking back on that fateful day is something that i wouldnt wish on my worst enamy. watching all those people panic as they made their way to the ships life rafts, There had been very little training to deal with a sinking before we set sail from South Hampton, And when we were shown aboard the ship before sailing the ships owners the White star Shipping company were more interested in telling the newspapers about the luxuries than they were about the safety features , we later learned wny because there were not enough boats for all passangers and crew to safely get off the ship. Where there should have been boats there were deck chairs . because deck chairs were more attractive to guest who were sailing with us than the thought of a boat of passangers on a ship that sunk. Back to my story. About 1030pm the Captain ordered the last boiler lit and the engine to go full speed , he wanted to reach New York city by early Morning instead of late evening the next day. He thought if he could bring the famed ship into port a whole half day earlier then he would be hearalded as the captain of the century. At 11:11pm the enevidable happened , our little city on the water would soon be side by side with the city of Atlantas at the bottom of the Atlanic Ocean. All that could be heard as the words rang out from the crows nest " ICEBERG DEAD AHEAD"!! At first we thought ok no big deal as a few shards of ice spintered on to the lower decks as we seemed to bump into what seemed like a island floating in the atlantic . What at first no one had noticed was that below the waterline harmless iceberg had gashed a great big hole into the side of the ship and mother nature and the ocean took no time to remind us that she was in conttol and no ship would control who was safe apon her waters. As Captain Smith ordered several of his officers to go below deck and to examine the damage Several of the first class passangers began asking the captain questions,,,,,,,, End of Part one
