It wasn't unheard of for a young girl to marry a civil war veteran for that man's pension. In Helen Viola Jackson's case, it was offered as means to repay her for the care she provided James Bolin
Helen Jackson died in 2020 at the age of 101 years old. She was the last remaining civil war widow. She was the youngest of the ladies at the time of marriage and lived an average of five years older than the other ladies.
Miss Jackson never petitioned for the inheritance she was owed, mainly because the man's daughters were not happy with the secret marriage.

I see we got the "civil war widow" thing straightened out below. I heard about this. I can't imagine living to 100!

Yes, I should have worded it differently myself, but I was using the same terminology as the sites I'd seen this on.
Right! All of that life lived and all the different things they've seen change.

@LindaOHio Sometimes we hear stories of people in their 90's and still very active. I remember a dance video where a woman was dancing with her grandson at age 90 or so. She was moving around like a spring chicken and that amazed me. I doubt it would be me as I'm in my 30's and my joints talk to me!

@ScribbledAdNauseum I can barely move around at my age. I can't imagine all the aches and pains you'd/I'd have by 100!

101 years of age is considered going the distance in life.
