Not quite sure what happened here

I went out to get the mail today, and there was this bird circling. It was the color of a mourning dove, or a little lighter, but it was larger. And then I saw a bird on the driveway that looked like a smaller version of the one that was circling. It was either an injured mate or a baby, I'm guessing. So my younger daughter took a picture of the one that was watching, and posted it online. Turns out it was a cooper's hawk. We were going to call the local wildlife rescue and see if they could help with the one on the driveway, but when we backed away, the larger one flew down, picked it up and flew off. Now I'm wondering if it was the same species or if it was lunch. Do birds fly down and rescue their babies?

I agree with JJ: it was probably lunch.
