Fruit Preservatives

The image is a copy/paste from my facebook memory feed some eight years ago. Just want to share what a joy it was back in time when fastfood meant driving the national highways, slowing down the side lanes, and stopping completely to purchase local fruits by the kilos.
Among my favoriets were lanzones, lychees, and chico. When in season, I love the starapples and atis also.
I am a fruit eater. But this discussion is actually a rant.
Thus far, I avoid eating imported fruits such as apples, oranges, pears, and grapes. Why? Because of the wax preservatives that keep the fruits crisp while in crates.
This pandemic year, my choice fruits are papayas and bananas. There's a bounty every where that fruit cart peddlers are never without these.
However, I noticed that the papaya tastes like chlorox. My daughter affirmed my suspicion two weeks ago. But I continued to eat the papaya for snacks.
Then yesterday, when I peeled two more crisp papayas, the inside was already juicy. Grrrrr!
I hate it when they put poisonous preservatives on fruits.

I don't blame you. You don't know what's fresh and what isn't. Crop dusting isn't as popular as it once was. And, now it's getting worse and worse. Oh well. Stick with what you know is safe.

@eileenleyva Then you know those will be safe, because you're growing them yourself.

@kaylachan That is correct. Papaya easily grows. The thing is, not all bears fruit. I have to cut two plants to make way for seedlings to grow.

I cannot get fresh fruit too often as there are no fresh fruit stands nearby. If I want fruit I usually have some canned or frozen. It is true that these days you never know what you are getting when you purchase food of any kind,

Canned fruits are preserved with thick syrup. Not good for people with diabetes. But sometimes, especially Christmastime, I do help my self with peach halves and fruit cocktail.
I wish you have a fruit stand nearby. We have one at every turn of street.

Wow. That was an ingenious project. A vegetable patch sustains crops we need for food.
A good foresight your daughter had.

I have papaya plants also and the fruits are a-budding. But I was advised to include papaya in the daily diet so I did have to buy from the grocer.

Your mother is correct. Just that the nutritious part is in the peeling. Sigh.
We better start nibbling our own - mangoes instead of apples.

if you don't like it then don't eat it. i try not to think too much about these things because then i wouldn't be eating anything.

The chlorox taste was strong on the papaya.
The bananas and other local fruits are all right.
Just that the papaya was recommended by the dietician.

@aureategloom Yup. Washed it even with liquid hand wash instead of dish detergent.
