I had been craving "Good Shepherd Brand" Ube Jam since I moved to canada. Ube or purple Yam is becoming mainstream in the US in Canada because the purple color looks good in instagram.
There are now locally made Ube Jam in the US and Canada now but not as good as the Nun's recipe. Purple Yam is a nutty tasting root crop that is purple in color. Its popular dessert item in the Philippines. In the 1970s a Nun from Baguio City invented Ube Jam and she uses the sales of the purple and creamy jam to help poor kids finish school. I just found out the inventor of Ube Jam, Sister Fidelis Atienza died today. The dessert she invented is now becoming a popular cake, ice cream and cookie flavor. The Ube Jam here in Canada is not as good as "good shepherd"
I hope Good shepherd brand continues after her death. They make the best Ube Jam and strawberry jelly. A mere vegetable is now becoming a mainstream dessert thanks to a Nun who wants to help scholars.

I also crave for ube jam once in a while, father use to buy a large jar mixed with sweet " macapuno" ( a freak soft coconut) and sweet jelly beans. Pure ube jam use to be available in square tin cans from Baquio when I was a kid. Ube jam is also my favorite " halo halo " ( a native Philippine delicacy) ingredient. Lots of people can copy it now but what they can't copy is Sister's advocacy of sending a lot of young people to school. R.I.P. Sister Fidelis Atienza.

@CaptAlbertWhisker it has almost no use in cooking, very large, when I was a kid I thought that the violet " kamote" ( sweet potato) and ube is the same.

Can you imagine, Ube Jam is now popular here. if this nun didn't make this Jam, Ube will still be a mere vegetable.

I hope so too. I was saddened by her passing away and I admire her for her achievement in creating something like that many have enjoyed and appreciated her product. She could have taken the profit from it but she decided to help many finish their education instead of keeping the profit for herself. Such a wonderful person.

she could have been a millionaire for her invention but she had a vow of poverty.

@CaptAlbertWhisker True that is admirable of her that she even used it to help others finish their schooling.
