Is it a blessing or a curse for actors?
Leonardo DiCaprio is most famously known as Jack in Titanic, Johnny Depp for Jack Sparrow.
Although it is quite unfortunate for Ralph Fiennes being known only as Voldemort by younger ones, even though he has played other much better roles. 
Some actors manage to break free from those by doing many different characters, but others just vanish from the movie scene altogether.

It really depends on the opportunity of a projects being offered to them. I think they can`t control it. Some are really lucky to have good roles offered to them and enjoyed it and some have no choice but to accept it as it is still a project to help them move on.
