I've read this book a few years ago and this year, Karen Marie Moning has brought the whole Fever series to an end. With that, I decided to do a complete re-read before I read the final book. Darkfever is the first book in the Fever series and yes, this series must be read in order. In Darkfever, MacKayla Lane has lost her sister Alina in Dublin while she was home sunning herself by the pool. Mac will forever be ashamed of that fact. While her parents fall into a grief filled oblivion, Mac has decided to go over to Ireland and make sure that they find justice for her sister and best friend. What she didn't realize when she got there was that she was going to get swept up into crazy-land. A land full of light and dark fae, death by sex fae and a number of other things that she would have sworn were only in children's books. When Mac gets lost trying to find her way back to her hotel one night, she ends up in a book store. This book store is a bibliophile's dream and at the time she didn't realize how much of a safe haven it would turn out to be for her. In that bookstore she meets Barrons, the owner of the bookstore. Mac would soon be joined at the hip with him and he would save her life on many occasions. Finding out what killed her sister and what she was on to before Alina died sends Mac reeling. She always had her constants. She was the daughter of Jack and Rainy Lane was one of them. It may not be the case for much longer. This new world that Mac has been thrown in to is dangerous and she feels like she's playing the game with one hand behind her back and blindfolded, she's that far behind the curve. Good thing she's a quick learner because the amount of things she has to learn is insurmountable. That is if she wants to stay alive. This first book will lay the basics for you and make off most of your main players. She also has a glossary of Irish and fae terms so that you're not completely lost. To me this is a must read. I was hooked from the first chapter until the end. The dark humor, the drama, the mystery and the sexual tension and banter are just so much fun to read while also still keeping you on the edge of your seat trying to figure out who the bad guys really are. *picture from google
