When Paul Greengrass’s visceral, authentic and intelligent Jason Bourne trilogy burst on to our screens at the turn of the millennium it changed action movies for ever. Even the Bond franchise had to react and copy the style with the equally gritty Daniel Craig introduced to our screens to match Matt Damon’s bone snapping super spy.
Extraction with Marvel beefcake Chris Hemsworth is not in that ball park but still an enjoyable action thriller romp that will keep your attention, especially the ladies. First time director Sam Hargrave who has done just about everything on a film set, from stunt double to writer, and again teams up with the Aussie hunk to blow some sh*t up and run up the body count as they did together in the Marvel Universe.
It’s mostly shot in India so prominent Indian actors aplenty to draw in that South East Asian audience as Hollywood action movies increasingly diverse as far as casting goes ( and far cheaper to shoot away from the West).

===Plot====
Rake (Hemsworth), an ex special forces type now working in security, is kicking back in the Outback when he gets a call to work in India. The job is to extract a kidnapped kid (Rudhraksh Jaiswal), the young son of an imprisoned crime lord.
He takes the gig and the team soon in steamy downtown Mumbai. But when the lift goes wrong and the cash isn’t paid the guys are soon stuck in the city with the kid as the goons of a rival gang close in. Tyler’s handlers tell him to bug out and leave the kid as the deal goes south but Rake having enough emotional reasons he is personally dealing with to get the kid out.
When Tyler’s on the ground emergency contact lets him down it’s a race through the crowded and sweaty city bustle with bullets and bombs flying everywhere to be extracted as the local crime lord (Pankaj Tripathi) has the cops and the army in his pocket, never mind the local thugs, ordering just about everyone to take out the gringo and get the boy.

With the likes of Netflix, Amazon, Apple and Sky making their own streaming movies now you have plenty of choice as far as movies go. But that also means saturation and so quality loss. Thankfully Extraction doesn’t suffer that and as a perfunctory action thriller it ticks enough boxes to be a fun watch. Hemsworth doesn’t need to take his shirt off too often and soon cracking skulls of the incompetent Indian Special Forces and wobbly headed gangsters. The body count is very high and the action higher, the predictable cigar chewing dialect and cheesy humor a plenty.
Its good fun and above par in the genre and its homage to Bourne noticeable but that’s no bad thing. Is bang on run time of two hours never leaves you bored and the first 50 minutes in India sold action. Don’t expect anything new here though other than a big budget action movie located in India and our hero seemingly indestructible as his Thor character. Oh and remember that these streaming movies don’t usually get a cinema releases in non Covid and current times so you increasingly need to keep an eye on your streaming platforms to see them as DVD or TV releases are rare.
