As promised in the “age” song for today, here’s a rock song to help you get over the headache of a cawntree music song! And, for those new to these countdowns, I really do like both songs. There’s lots of great music out there in a number of places; and, as Sir Paul once said, “You’ve gotta search for it.” I searched and found this one with “old” in the title, and here it is! I Hope That I Get Old Before I Die - They Might Be Giants Man, I’m tired from just typing that! A former co-worker is a big TMBG fan, and he was amazed when I told him I saw them early in their career (not too long after their first album came out) when they toured with a tape machine. They eventually got popular enough to get a full band, but it was so fun to shout the chorus of this song (especially the “why, why, why!” part) when they did it with just the two Johns onstage. My, how times have changed. These guys are college/alt legends now. How did they do it? Well, back before the internet, they had a thing called “Dial-a-Song,” where you could call a number and hear a new TMBG song. Sometimes the self-promotion is better than anything the record label can come up with. I Hope That I Get Old Before I Die Written by John Flansburgh and John Linnell Recorded by They Might Be Giants From They Might Be Giants, 1986 Clear off the kitchen table, darling:

I bet they borrowed that title a little from The Who.

Nope totally new on me. Why are we talking about being old? I have not gone past 16 and do not plan to do so ever,

My birthday is this month, and the calendar says I’m older than my mind claims to be.

Seriously? Where do you find these? This was more like a novelty song. Reminded me of Elmo & Patsy. :-)

I don’t find them, they find me. All their stuff is a little on the silly side. One of their funniest songs is “Marty Beller Mask,” where they claim their drummer (Marty Beller) is “really Whitney Houston on the drums.”
