Halfway through the dual countdowns of songs with “old” and “age in the title, and I’m halfway to next year’s birthday.
Nah, that’s just the record snowfall for the day (1.8 inches) making my bones creak. A little good music will lighten my bones, so here’s today’s song with “old” in the title.
#6: (Remember the Days of the) Old Schoolyard - Cat Stevens
If you’ve never heard this song before and you play the link, the first thing you’re going to think when those synthesizers start is, “THAT isn’t Cat Stevens!!”
The former Steven Georgiou and current Yusuf was indeed a cool Cat. This song (and the entire album) was early in the days of synthesizer use before they became the rage in the 80s new wave. In the 70s, generally the only people using synthesizers were prog rock bands (and Queen famously boasted NO SYNTHESIZERS on the back of their album covers).
The critics (and fans) didn’t take too kindly to the folkie using synthesizers, as this album wasn’t the shining star that Tea For the Tillerman was (and still is). I won’t discuss whether he should’ve gone the synth route. I just know I love this song.

That was Harry Chapin. Cat’s parenting song was “Father and Son.”

@CarolDM — if you read the comments they point out that it’s not Cat Stevens.
And it really isn’t.
I remember the old days of Napster, where there were a good 100 files marked “Dust in the Wind” by “the Eagles.” Um....NO.
