This story is kind of odd since in all of my years of reporting good news stories I have never heard of a mom to be who called the local fire department to come to her home to assist her to deliver her baby around 4 am local time. Erica Rodriguez who is the mom to be could not have her husband take her to the local hospital in Whitman in time since she was not going to make in time before her baby would come into the world. The Whitman firefighters were called to come to the McCarthy home to assist Erica have her child since the fire station was close to their home since Erica's husband Jason McCarthy made the call for assistance. Whitman firefighter Stephen Foster and his assistants remained calm as they assisted Erica give birth to her son Nathan. After the birth of Nathan, both Erica and her son were taken to a local hospital where they are going to be healthy and happy. Both Erica and Jason are very grateful that the firefighters were kind enough to take time to assist them in making them happy that they were able to bring a child into the world to be with Nathan's older siblings. I would have never known that firefighters are able to delivery babies into the world as well as put out fires and save lives.

Maybe part of their training is to respond to all kind of emergency situations.

@florelway I agree with you since there are reports that firefighters are trained to use first aid skills.

I would think that firefighters would be trained in how to deliver a baby. I'm glad they were able to assist her.

I agree with you since there are reports of firefighters being trained in first aid training. Maybe the media does not report that firefighters are trained to bring babies into the world.

That is a very good story. It is so good to know that first responders are always available. I know the woman who gave birth along with her husband were happy about the first responders.

I'm sure its quite common - firefighters, I've heard, are generally the first of first responders to arrive on scene when you call 911. They are trained in first aid and childbirth assistance would be part of their training. I'm sure it is a nice thing to attend on - rather than a dangerous fire or a horrible accident.

I know if I were a firefighter, bringing a child to the world is easier than fighting a fire.

While not an everyday thing, firefighters and first responders are trained in the bare basics of child birth. Babies are going to be born when they want. We can schedule all day, but it doesn't always work as we planned. Once a woman's water breaks, delivery can happen within a few minutes to a few hours. And, just like any animal, the woman knows.

When I trained to become a EMT there were firefighters in the class as well. They along with police have some basic medical teaching, including assisting in childbirth. Well done to the them. Welcome to the world Nathan.
