Bringing Something If Visiting Someone

I still remembered my old man who kept on telling us to bring some food when visiting someone. It is a family culture that needs to pass on from one generation to another. It does not being practiced by one of our cousins on my father's side. He and his family are always visiting us every week. They never bring anything to eat. My family and I are not stingy when it comes to having some visitors. We let them eat and have snacks before they leave the house. What's your family practice with this concern? We're not expectd to bring anything, unless we're aware ahead of time we're attending a pot luck. Which is a gathering where everyone is responsible for bringing at least one dish.

I do think that a potluck is a good idea when organizing an activity indoor or outdoor. We also do this by having some parties.

Yes, I do this. I usually bring cake or sweets. Something that everyone eats.

@allen0187 I doubt it. He knew that many people think of him this way.

It is a good gesture for us to give something. Even when my cousin is still single, he never dares to do this.

We have a habit to bring something when we visit others. It can be fruits, snacks and so on.

I heard it is also a tradition in your country. Some Chinese families continue this practice during special festivals there.

It's also call being polite. We're not told to do it, but we learn from the elders and then do it. I would bring fruit or food to the family I'm visiting. It's not compulsory, but it's a part of the culture. Some people no longer practice this these days.

I really cannot get why my cousin is like this. I do think that most Asian people practice this. Due to this pandemic, I prefer not to have guests in the house.

Sounds like a good tradition, but people don't always do it.

I agree. Not all people can do this. Sometimes my mom and I are just letting it go and ignore the fact that my cousin was being raised like this.

in our country, bringing presents when you visit others at festival is age-old tradition.but in normal time, whether bringing present depends on intention of your visit.if just for business,no need.but if for eating party,we will bring presents, never get empty on hand.

I do think that it depends on what kind of events will happen. As I described above, it is just a family tradition that needs to be practiced.
