Spotlight's reporting is true.

At the end of the investigative journalism movie entitled 'Spotlight,' a list of places is shown where victims have come brave to testify about the atrocities perpetrated by Catholic priests. Last on the list is Manila, Philippines. Got to watch the movie only last night but I have heard of the accusations about the church long before - after the horrendous 9/11 that shocked America and the world. Like the reporters of Spotlight, I was in aghast knowing that the supposedly spiritual fathers people, especially children, trust and look up to, were nothing but hideous criminals donning priestly cassocks. I could attest also to the appalling acts these crooks have done. Fr. Gui_do, a Jesuit, did smack me twice, once in the lobby of the old Radio Veritas, in full view of my friends and broadcast people who laughed, so I thought it was just an endearment, though I felt it filthy, and once more, in a room right after he sent my friends away on tasks. I shoved him off, of course, and kept my distance all the duration of my apprenticeship. Saw him again in the Ateneo, in a graduate class, and I told my seatmate Menchu about it, an innuendo that I was disgusted with the creature. What came next was a sadder confession that that flamboyant retreat master even attempted to elicit sexual favors with Menchu back in college, in one of the closed retreats. Good thing she was able to ward him off. Not just Fr. Gui_do, but a visiting monsignor also whose name escapes my mind now but he attempted to confine me in a room via intimate conversation. Good thing a nun came to bring snacks and I had my escape. Worse than my story was when I literally saw a young priest groping my students' breasts during a meditative class moment when everyone was hugging each other. I intervened, of course, and pulled away my girls. Told the nun about it but never learned what action she resorted to. Really infuriating these criminals are guising themselves as men of God. Grrrrr.

They(perverts) are everywhere and sorry you and friend had experienced this. I am fortunate I went to Catholic school for every elementary grades 1-8..8 years of sold foundational God filled education with no abuse or assaults from anyone. I have much respect for the nuns and priests of my school. Fortunate I guess.

Same here, 'I have much respect for the nuns and priests of my school.' The convent school I attended was exclusive for girls. No incident there. Not privy to schools exclusive for boys. No rumor nor report was ever made. The incidents I mentioned happened during my apprenticeship at a Catholic radio station. But the one with my students happened in an exclusive school. Most unfortunate. The girls didn't realize they were being sexually harassed. I really got angry and looked at the young priest eye to eye. He smiled as if he was innocent. Grrrr.

@RebeccasFarm I would have punched him in the face if I was not the teacher. Recalling that face makes me want to puke. Thanks for understanding.

The academe was even complicit! The children had no recourse.

Good thing that despite those bad experiences with them you still hold on to your faith. Many lost their faith because they become victims of such kinds of people inside the church. I guess I am just lucky that my encounters with them were all positive and none had made an impression that made me think there are bad priests around. Although when I was young I could hear those stories of priests getting involved with other women and having children too.

@eileenleyva I do not know but if that happened to me i might not be the one that will be one that will stay strong with my faith since I have traumatic experience with them.

@rsa101 In cases such as trauma, it is advisable to find someone to talk about it - a confidante, or someone you could trust. Speaking about your bad experience could actually lessen the emotional pain incurred. Here's news this morning.

I was only smacked in the face, the victims were molested and abused. It's not about my luck or your luck or the victims' bad luck. It's not even about losing faith. It's the atrocity done on the children by priests.

The reason why the Catholic Church suffers persecution because of such demonic acts by men who profess worldly desires in their vow of chastity! Very mind boggling. The church should do some cleansing of its ranks!

The reason why Pope Benedict XVI resigned the Papacy. It was implied in the movie "Two Popes." Sure does, the Catholic church is doing mandatory purgation. That's also why Pope Francis wanted Cardinal Chito Tagle in the Vatican.

I was old enough when that happened. I was able to act accordingly. The children didn't have the chance.

This is very sad, because this type of beast harms the Catholic Church to which I belong. People generalize and say that it is the religion, that it is the church and sadly this type of acts always exceeds the acts of goodness and purity of many of the priests and nuns who are part of the Catholic Church. For my part, I frequent many Catholic schools that provided support to the communities and allowed children and young people to go to mass on Saturdays and Sundays and to play and participate in catechesis. While participating in this, and in the church of the communities where I lived, I only saw acts of true nobility and detachment. I do not deny that surely there was more than one servant, as you say, disguised with a cassock, but in my opinion, the majority were good people.

I share your sentiment. There are so many priests and nuns who are genuine apostles of our Lord. Could attest to our parish priest who mops the entire church when none is watching. Our Cardinal Chito Tagle, now at the Vatican at the behest of Pope Francis, does sweep the yard and do other menial works. Very ordinary people these men of God are. A favorite is Fr. Benigno Beltran, a missionary of the Divine Word who has spent his priesthood among the poor of Smokey Mountain (a mountain of garbage), teaching and caring for the children especially. Gosh, this priest has a doctorate in Rome but he dwelt with the poor. I know, evil creatures have infiltrated the church. But don't worry, the Catholic Church is rock-solid. The cornerstone was installed by our Lord. Please continue serving the community and helping the good priests and nuns. They do need our help.

@eileenleyva I agree with you. There are more of us good, and we must support our church in its work.

@profree2019 You are correct, there are more good in the church. And the church will continue with the mission of serving our Lord.

The egregious creatures were wolves in sheep's clothing. Work of the evil one. As Peter writes, 'Be sober, be vigilant, because your adversary the devil walketh about as a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour.'

@kaylachan Yes, the name of the priest was also a banned word. Yup, read the entire Bible several times. Greatest story ever told about a God who allowed man to assert his puny intellect over all creation, thus the devastating tumults that followed one after the other throughout history. But in His great Love for mankind, God devised ways for a way out for man.
