A Connecticut Yankee Moved to Georgia

United States

I know some of you have responded to my last post about the roll call, where do you live by telling me that it is next to each member's name. But I was looking for a bit more than just a country. I was looking more for the essence of where you live, which of course you don't have to share if you don't want to. I thought as a community, we could learn a bit more about places all over the world. Here's a bit more about my story: I grew up in New England in CT. We always lived 30 minutes from the ocean. But it was on the Long Island Sound so there wasn't much in the way of waves. I loved growing up near the beach, but the rest of the state was boring. Very flat with some hills at the opposite end of the state. But what I really craved was the mountains. The mountains have always held a certain magnetism for me. And after a while, I just wanted to leave flat, boring Connecticut and move to the mountains. I wanted to move North to VT but my husband, who is older than me, didn't want the snow that Vermont has. With some encouragement from my husband's son who lives in Georgia, we researched the mountains of North Georgia. We came down and fell in love with the area. It is sort of like the Vermont of the south. We found a nice community that also is a nature preserve. We see deer, wild turkeys, chipmunks, and plenty of birds on a regular basis. And sometimes we even get blessed and get to see a black bear. I do love that part of where we live. And there are lots of hiking trails and lakes here also. These are the things that I like about where we now live. I also like that we live in the "Bible belt" where people can speak freely of their Christian faith and not feel ostracized because of it. In Connecticut, you can't really talk publicly about your faith because it isn't politically correct. What I don't like are the rain and humidity. It rains down here, a lot. Sometimes in the summer, it rains every day for a week, and then humidity makes it feel like we live in a sauna. It may not rain all day, but even a brief shower causes the humidity to increase. In the summer, I spend most of my day inside and go outside with my dog for a walk at 7 or 8 pm when it starts to cool down. I do miss the snow we had in Connecticut, but we also get a little bit here in Georgia. We get a few storms of 1 to 3 inches in the winter. I always run outside with my camera and take photos when it snows. So, that's what I was looking for...to find out more about the special things about where you live. What is special about where you live? Or do you not like it and wish to move, like I did?

I like the Lake Charles area since in my neighborhood it is close to a scrap yard and a water plant which is on the Calcasieu River. Most of my life I have lived either near a canal. lake or river.

@Deepizzaguy Living near any type of body of water is nice I think. Very calming to take a walk down near the water. Or to hear the water in a river at night.

@Kouponkaren The advantages of living near the Panama Canal was seeing the ships go by, the bad part was frogs and snakes in the grass area. Living near the Calcasieu River is seeing the ships getting ready to be scrapped.

I hate Ohio winters as I hate cold. We are in the country so regularly see deer, raccoons, squirrels, an occasional skunk, fox and so far only hear the coyotes. They will be shot on sight if I see them as have cats, goats, chickens and ducks. All of which they like to eat. It is kind of flat and boring in my part of the state.

@wolfgirl569 I don't mind the cold, especially if there is snow. I would rather have cold than too much hot weather. Oh, and speaking of coyotes, we have a den of coyotes living way down behind our house in a greenspace area. I have only seen them a few times since we moved here, but I hear them at night sometimes.

I live in Florida, as you'll see when I hit "send". I hate the humidity, especially during days like this. We had a brief rain shower just now, but since it was 3 in the afternoon, the sun is back out in full force and a little worse then before. Fun.... If I wanted to move, I couldn't. I would never ask that of my husband. Despite the hot humid weather nearly year-round, I still love living here. Always will be a Florida girl at heart.

@Kaylachan were you born and brought up in Florida? Florida summers are definitely too hot for me!
