The Philippines is a relatively small archipelago south-east of the great Pacific Ocean. Enroute to the Moluccas or the Spice Islands, now known as Indonesia, Ferdinand Magellan stumbled upon the archipelago where he was met with mixed reactions - a hospitable welcome with Rajah Kolambu and a fierce and violent battle with Datu Lapulapu. Magellan expired in the Battle of Mactan, the natives strong defense against foreign invaders, but was able to plant the 'Cross.' It's the story of the Filipino, forever defending the islands from foreign aggression. The Filipinos has already won against the Spaniards in June of 1898, only to be replaced again by another Western invader, the Americans. Centuries of colonization though has not changed inherent Filipino values of being hospitable and friendly. The Americans were welcomed into Philippine life amicably. And then actually fought with the GI's against the Japanese in World War II. The numbing reality now is that Filipinos have won independence for themselves, only to be suppressed by their own. An amalgamation of bad blood streamed in the veins of the occupants of the Malakanyang, the country's palace for the leadership of the land. Yes, dictators have come and gone and still exists. A hundred and twenty-three years of independence and the Filipinos are still reeling from the clutches of cessation of human rights. As if the wicked never goes away, the Chinese, as Li Ma Hong once started, wants to own not only the country's natural resources but the country itself. Nope. You cannot. The blood of Filipino martyrs still reign in our veins. Here, watch:

I barely noticed that our independence day just passed me by. It was a Saturday so I decided to do my weekly routine of maintaining my little hobby where l forget my current world and live in my little world and independence with the current world. I just couldn't feel my independence in our present government who rules in iron hand against its people and favors with a foreign country's interest over his own. Maybe that is the reason why I chose to hide in my own little world and chose not to think about it.

@eileenleyva True I see flags displayed everywhere and the people seemed to be uninterested in what happened to our country on this day, I even do not see the president doing its usual message when this day arrives. Anyway not interested to hear any of his antics whenever he speaks which sounded like a drunk ranting publicly.

@eileenleyva Yeah I will never be interested in anything that this government is trying to advocate since we can really see their incompetence and the leader itself seems to be out of order anymore. I just follow what I think is for the betterment of everyone like the vaccine they are trying to do right now and following the health protocols to protect myself and my family.

Sharing the same sentiments. I watched joggers and walkers down my street and nary a soul greeted me a happy Independence Day. I kept my quiet wishing our fellow Pinoy remember this important day in the history of our country. Ain't it heart wrenching when we think about our heroes offering their lives for the motherland?

We should vote out the current government and its cronies for us to be truly independent.

I remember it because it's also my sister in laws birthday. But I bought a flag a few weeks before hand and stick it on the window.

Then the question is — who will be the next martyr to save the Spratlys group of island from the Chinese occupation?

Her name is Vera Joy Ban-eg. Not a martyr yet but a real live hero.
