My grandfather, the fisherman.

Cosme Ibanez Leyva. That's my grandfather's name. We called him Lolo Omeng, The picture appeared in my album of memories. Staring at the blurry old photograph of my grandfather in a suit doesn't really jibe in my recollection of a simple old man in white shirt and loose pyjamas always quiet in a corner, smiling upon us children noisy and loud. Lolo Omeng was a fisherman. That meant he didn't have education. No read, no write. As all in the fisher village were in a province by the sea. But tales has it my grandpa built the boats and the barrio roads with his own improvised measuring stick. He was a natural mathematician. A natural weather forecaster also, for he knew when to fish. No read, no write. But his children became lawyers, the eldest was even an Ambassador to the Middle East. The rest became businesswomen successful in marketing what else"? - fish, of course. The grandchildren became musicians, like the ones in my own family. My grandpa was chief amongst serenading the lovely ladies of the barrio. He could sing and play the guitar. But the most heartbreaking story of my grandpa was right after the war when he searched for my father from one hospital to another, walking the length of provinces all the way to far away Pampanga where he found my father in an iron bed with a bullet still on a leg. My father was a guerilla. On finding his beloved son, my Lolo Omeng hired a calesa, a horse-drawn carriage, that transported my father back home. And the father cared for his son till he was well again.

Thank you. My grandfather only exists in the hearts of his grandchildren now. I do feel melancholic recalling how he smiled.

Wow! You did capture the essence of my story in your response. You understood my story perfectly well. Thank you. My grandfather rose above the miserable conditions of the fisherfolks. The barrio was his stage. I do believe he gave his best performance. Salamat, kabayan, naunawaan mo ang kwento ng isang mangingisda.

@ZedSmart Sharing exactly the same sentiments with you. The fisher and farmer folks top the line in hierarchy of the labor force precisely because they provide the food on our tables. Yet, they are marginalized and condescended upon. The farmers couldn't till their own lands. The fishermen eat canned sardines instead of fresh fish. Kabayan, that is a conviction deep and most profound! Kudos to you, kabayan.

@eileenleyva Thanks. I have so much respect for the fisher folks and the farmers because they brought food on our tables. They made a lot of sacrifices for many. Their life in the mid ocean is not easy and risky. You must be proud of your Lolo Omeng.

Very nice story of your grandfather. He is indeed and ideal father and never gave up on looking for his son no matter how difficult it could hav been back then where transportation was difficult after the war. His efforts were rewarded and l guess he was blessed with grandchildren that went to become successful in their lives. He may have been uneducated but what he achieved in life has been quite a success story because of what his children and grandchildren have achieved.

@eileenleyva I guess he was already content in seeing all his effort was not put to waste. Many of them in their generation gave up looking to rebuild their families after the war. But he has persisted in not giving up and he was rewarded accordingly.

@rsa101 You did hit a very important point there. The aftermath of the war was so grievous our country was reduced to a zombie land. The survivors must have presumed their families and relatives casualties of the war. Point being - a few old people did try to narrate their experiences of the war to me in conversations but I was unprepared and didn't get to jot down their stories. Sayang.

Thank you for recognizing the my grandfather's very ordinary life a success story. I did wish I had more chances of listening to his wisdom. He has retreated to silence while we played in front of him. Most likely he was praying and bestowing his blessings on us. That is also how my father was.
