''Speaking in Tongues'': a Proponent of it Destroys it (while he's Trying to Defend it)

Hopefully, use of the "'Lord of the Rings' Boromir-meme" carries the indication of "sarcasm"

So I read an article in a ministry's magazine, and the writer brings up the MAIN Scripture-passage from which they get 'Speaking in Tongues.' And he says 'in plain text' "It doesn't say the disciples were 'speaking the languages of all these people.' It says the people heard in those languages." That (and the way the disciples' "in-filling by the Holy Spirit" was usually accompanied by 'speaking in tongues') convinces him that 'speaking in tongues' gives him "power against the devil." I (and other clear-thinking philosophy-students) can clearly see this as ... have you seen that Steve Martin movie Leap of Faith? In it, he shows how A LOT of faith-healing happens as a result of 'the minds (belief-filled brains) of the healed'---not "the power of their deity."

While the gift of speaking in tongues was a feature while the apostles were still on earth, it was not identified by Jesus as the identifying mark of the people who he would use to do his work. John 13:35 'By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.” Paul made this interesting statement at 1 Corinthians 13:8 'Love never fails. But if there are gifts of prophecy, they will be done away with; if there are tongues, they will cease...' His people will be doing the work he did, doing it in loving unity. Matthew 24:14 he says: ...this good news of the Kingdom will be preached in all the inhabited earth for a witness to all the nations, and then the end will come.'

@sulynsi Because those three things aren't 'real' (i.e. they can't be 'measured' for loudness or number-of-times-you-speak-them). When I die, my family will know that I continue to love them, that my hope guides them, that my faith empowers them ... they can't MEASURE any of those gifts, but they only KNOW them.
