Day 63
Judges 11:29 Then the Spirit of the LORD came upon Jephthah, and he passed over Gilead, and Manasseh, and passed over Mizpah of Gilead, and from Mizpah of Gilead he passed over unto the children of Ammon.
30 And Jephthah vowed a vow unto the LORD, and said, “If thou shalt without fail deliver the children of Ammon into mine hands,
31 “Then it shall be, that whatsoever comes forth of the doors of my house to meet me, when I return in peace from the children of Ammon, shall surely be the LORD’S, and I will offer it up for a burnt offering.
Have you ever made rash promises that returned to haunt you when you succeeded in your activity or mission?
Jephthah made a vow to God. God did not require Jephthah to make a vow to defeat the Ammonites. God’s Spirit was on him to defeat them. However, Jephthah made an unbreakable vow to God about what he would do if he returned from the battle in victory.
Today, anyone who killed their child as Jephthah did would be sentenced to prison.
As Christians, you need to consider the words you speak when you pray. Not every prayer is wholesome. Not all prayers are vows. Most prayers are requests you make to God for something in your life. You don’t make demands of God to do something if He comes through for you.
Do you ever wonder why God didn’t stop Jephthah from making the vow he made or make it void?
Numbers 30:2 If a man vow a vow unto the LORD, or swear an oath to bind his soul with a bond; he shall not break his word, he shall do according to all that proceeds out of his mouth.
Jephthah was under oath to fulfill his vow to God. However, he didn’t need to kill his daughter to fulfill his vow.
Leviticus 27:1 And the LORD spoke unto Moses, saying,
2 Speak unto the children of Israel, and say unto them, “When a man shall make a singular vow, the persons shall be for the LORD by thy estimation.
3 “And thy estimation shall be of the male from twenty years old even unto sixty years old, even thy estimation shall be fifty shekels of silver, after the shekel of the sanctuary.
4 “And if it be a female, then thy estimation shall be thirty shekels.”
Jephthah needed to pay the vow according to the estimation God told Moses, thirty shekels. God didn’t require the death of his daughter, but the offering for the vow he made.
Be careful about the promises you make or the vows you speak.
Let’s pray: Father, You know my heart. Help me not to be hasty with my words or rash in my actions. Put a guard on my lips so that I honor you in everything I say and do. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.

Just think, how many times in the spur of the moment or in the middle of a crisis have we made a promise to God, and then not remembered what we vowed? I'm sure it has happened to many of us. We need to be careful of what we are asking for or what we are promising we will do. We should not take these vows lightly or make them without thinking of their meaning or potential consequences later on.
