My latest coach excursion day trip took me from Preston to Hawes in Wensleydale, North Yorkshire. It was described as a trip to “Hawes / Wensleydale’ which made me think it was covering a wider area of Wensleydale but the journey centred on the lovely compact village of Hawes and the nearby Wensleydale Creamery, a working museum cheese factory and shop. Quite a fascinating place and as I expected given the use of the cheese in their animated adventures, statues of Wallace & Gromit were on display too. The trip was purposely timed for street market day but this was quite an unusual street market with traders presenting quite unusual and often expensive items. One sold home made leather trouser belts. Another specialized in selling binoculars. My primary interest was pubs and pub signs though Hawes has only four pubs, three of them literally next door ro one another, (dominated by the local Masham (Black Sheep) and Theakston’s (Old Peculier) brewers. The only pub out of the four with a true sign (The Crown) was closed. The Board Inn (clever pun on Boarding House) had one of its front beer garden benches taken over by crochet’d characters from Lewis Carroll’s Alice In Wonderland celebrating the Mad Hatter’s Tea Party. The Cheshire Cat prefers to hang up barside inside the pub. Great views of the North Yorkshire Moors on route and from the village, and very friendly bar staff and fellow tourists too. The museum shop was selling bottled beers including Masham’s Holy Grail Ale (named after The Monty Python Movie). Arthur Chappell
