fighting food waste and saving on groceries:

One of the first things I do when I go on break at work is to check the culls areas in the back of the store and grab what I think my family can use. I check it again after I clock out at the end of my shift because often new things will appear there throughout the day. Today I was able to bring home some cinnamon rolls (great for easy breakfasts on school days), some sliced chicken deli meat, a quart of organic half & half, a loaf of bread, 2 BBQ ranch bagged salads, and a large bag of assorted cookies from the self-serve cookie bar. There were several dozen cartons of eggs and some random yogurt singles too, but I've got plenty of eggs and yogurt right now. I also passed up on several cakes and pastries today (although I was very tempted to grab the giant soft pretzels), although sometimes I'll bring those home too. Altogether, that's over $40 worth of food that was destined for the trash. Granted, I work at a fancy high-priced organic grocery store (and that's not the price I would have paid with my employee discount) and it might have cost less at a larger chain, but you can't beat free! I managed to take a photo of the bread, cookies, and cinnamon rolls; I put the other items away in the fridge before I thought of the photo.

@spiderdust I don't know perhaps some of the bigger supermarkets here in Florida but I have never worked at one, There are two that have big deli departments and is would be a shame if they did not share,

I wonder how many grocery stores do this sort of thing for their employees and the community?

@spiderdust My kids are the SAME way . . . one look at the word vegan and they won't even touch it . . . best just not to tell them . Ohhh, I love that bread pudding idea . . . I'll have to try that !

I have to hide the box for the cinnamon rolls from the kids -- they see the word "vegan" and think they aren't going to be very good, but they like the vegan ones and non-vegan ones equally if they don't know which ones they're eating. When they get a little too stale, I cube them up and remake them into bread pudding. Cinnamon roll bread pudding for breakfast or dessert is wonderful!

This is awesome. I really cannot understand why hunger and food wastage are problems we experience. They cancel out each other. We do not have places where we can pick up free food like this. The closest I can think of are bakeries that sell their bread/cakes at a discount when the store is about to close.

@spiderdust agree with you about being careful about food poisoning. Most of the food being thrown though are still good and safe to eat.

On one hand, I understand being cautious in order to not accidentally give anyone food poisoning. On the other hand, it's frustrating to see perfectly edible food going into the trash.

Is it safe to bring those things home?

Yes, a lot of times they are out there because it’s getting close to date but the food or product is still good to be used. Some times places will toss things the week before it goes bad like baby food instead of calling donation places to pick them up for their in need it gets trash.

Yes, it's completely safe. Anything that is moldy or unfit for consumption isn't placed there.

It does, doesn't it? My store was resetting their pasta and sauce display this morning and culled out the extras that they won't be selling anymore. I'll post about that in a little while.
