Day 82
2 Samuel 21:1 Then there was a famine in the days of David three years, year after year; and David enquired of the LORD. And the LORD answered, “It is for Saul, and for his bloody house, because he slew the Gibeonites.”
Do you wonder why things happen the way they do? What do you do when everything is going along well, and suddenly trouble hits and you stand amazed and perplexed? Often, trouble starts long before you notice it.
A famine hit Israel. David waited three years before asking God why a famine plagued Israel. God told him it was Saul’s doing. He killed the Gibeonites who were under God’s protection from the time when Joshua made a covenant with them.
As Christians, you need to be aware of the promises you make, not only to God, but to people who rely on you. The Gibeonites trusted Israel to keep them safe from their enemies. When they didn’t, God took exception to what they did and caused trouble to come on Israel. God will do the same thing to you when you don’t keep your promises. You might not notice the trouble right away, but one day it will get your attention and you will wonder why. God will tell you why, just as He told David why they were in the middle of a famine.
When David avenged the Gibeonites, the famine ended. When you keep your promises, your trouble will end too.
Let’s pray: Father, help me to be faithful to the promises I make. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.

It is easy to make a promise without giving it due thought. We should be careful to keep them. Maybe even write them down if we are prone to forget.
