Thank God it's Friday

Friday is probably a special day for all of us and for many different reasons. It has been my favourite day of the week for many years. As a teenager it was the night when I went to the local Youth Club and met up with my friends. When I went to work it was payday and it was also the last morning that I had to get up early and catch the train to work. Now I am retired my reasons may have changed. It is the last weekday when I tackle any remaining jobs and unfinished business so that I am free to enjoy whatever the weekend has to offer. There is satisfaction in being able to rest on Friday evening knowing that my jobs are done for a couple of days. Thank God it’s Friday is a sentence that has become a regular statement recognized by its initials alone TGIF. This has even become the title of a TV show. The other thing about Friday is that it is the only day of the week described as ‘good’ – Good Friday occurs at Easter once a year and is celebrated through the world. The reason it is described as ‘good’ is a reminder of a very bad Friday when a mocking crowd gathered together at 9 a.m. to watch an innocent man being nailed to a wooden stake and left to die. On that particular Friday at 3 p.m. the man, Jesus, announced that his work was done with a shout ‘It is finished’ and then committed his spirit to his Father and breathed his last. What was good about that Friday for Him and for us was that he had become the Sacrificial Lamb, the role he had accepted in order to take humanities’ punishment for the evil that separated us from God. He had secured forgiveness for those who would believe in him. He had finished his role as Lamb of God in order for us to become sons of God. That just about sums up Friday for me. What about you?
