A pay it forward moment

The other day my husband and I were in a Food Lion grocery store in Greenville, NC and I went to bring the car up while my husband checked out. After he got in the car, he looked at the receipt and saw that he wasn't charged for four gallons of water, so he went back in to pay for it. But the cashier told him the lady in line in front of him had paid for it! The odd thing, though, was that the lady said something to my husband like "I got your water" or "I paid for the water", but it didn't register on him what she meant or was saying. So, of course he didn't thank her which looked to her as if it didn't matter. When he found out what happened, we drove all over that parking lot trying to find her! We both wanted to let her know what a thoughtful thing that was of her to do. And it's not that it was a lot of money (maybe $4?), but just such a kind act and she thinks we didn't even appreciate it! That's the worst part. She believes that her act of kindness didn't matter. I've tried to think of ways to let her know, maybe the newspaper? a bulletin board in the grocery store? The cashier didn't know her. We drove all over that parking lot...all we know was she was African American, young to middle age, and was wearing a KFC tee-shirt. I really hope she somehow knows we do appreciate what she did. EDIT: I just wrote a note in the local newspaper in the "Bless Your Heart" section thanking the lady in case she happens to read it.

I do, too. The worst part is thinking she might have felt we didn't even appreciate what she did.

Many more should do this. Such kindness. Nice of you to post it in the paper too.

I know we shouldn't do kind acts to get a thank you, but I believe kind acts should be acknowledged. And I'm sorry we didn't get to thank her.
