This year I started re-reading everything Tolkien starting with The Hobbit, then The Lord of The Rings, then the Silmarillion, Unfinished Tales and then his Letters. I could not get into Unfinished tales, again, until I bought the 12 volume History of Middle Earth (I just finished the 5th book). Been a Tolkien fan since 6th grade when our teacher read part of Lord of the Rings to us before he transferred to the office to cover for the Vice Principal who covered for the Principal who was on sabbatical.
Anyway, in the years since then, I've read Lord of the Rings 30+ times, read most of his other books and seen the movies more than once.
Yesterday I went with my younger daughter to see The Fellowship of the Ring in the theater. They were showing the extended edition, which I haven't seen.
When the movies originally came out, I just enjoyed them. I didn't pay particular attention to the parts that deviated from the books other than a couple of things that just annoyed me or really stood out. Well this time, I looked out for those things. There were way way more of them than I remembered, but still they were mostly not ridiculous deviations (unlike the Hobbit movies which, well, don't get me started).
So now I am planning to take half days off for the next two Wednesdays so that I can catch the extended versions of The Two Towers and The Return of the King.
Viggo Mortensen sure is cute.

Strangely, I've never gotten around to reading Tolkien. The books probably would have completely hooked me when I was a teenager, but I didn't have exposure to them. My primary source of books in those days was the school library, and Tolkien was not part of their collection.
