my car will start and only run a few mint then stop and awhile start again the people i bought from said it had been seting for a while

Check the fuel filter, there might be something that is block the fule from getting in, and then settles when the engine, is not running, allowing you to restart. Something like this happened to me with a car that I used to own, and these are the same symptoms, that you are now experiencing.
