The church commemorates today the martyrdom of St. Cornelius, the pope during the tumultuous persecution of Christians by Novatianus who started a schism that the church should be purist and not accept lapsed Catholics back to the faith.
Pope Cornelius shares the martyrdom with a friend, St. Cyprian, who rallied the Christians-in-hiding from the Novatians, and was subsequently beheaded.
As was in the time of these two courageous defenders of the faith, many Christians are also being martyred in the recent years - ten million from 2005 to 2015, or 90 thousand a year, or 13 a day.
Ain't that mind-boggling, considering the digital age of mobile phones?
Information may be as easy as a finger click but never before was fact more distorted and people more opinionated as what is happening now.
Never easy to be a Christian.
But thanks to Cornelius, Cyprian, and the martyrs, the church gets to be restored according to the love of God.
And here I am, in my humble abode, far from persecution, thinking, that if it is my fate to be a martyr, would I be as courageous?
I hope I would be so.

Yes, the reward for martyrs is great in heaven! That is in Matthew 5: 12.

@eileenleyva Exactly. And it's also stated in Revelation.

Afghanistan's story prods every one to be ready. There's no recourse when terror comes.
