License Renewals Pandemic Style

OMG my daughter just pointed out to me that my license plate sticker expired LAST October (2020). Because of COVID Service Ontario didn't even mail out reminders and the police weren't stopping people with expired plates. So I had to go online and pay for 2 years since my next renewal is next month. I totally panicked. The receipt I printed out said it expired October 4, 2021... but I just paid for 2 years? Duh! It's the temporary that I printed out that is only good until October 4th. I should have my physical sticker before then. Why does the government have to be so complicated? The first person I spoke to on the phone should have been able to tell me what I eventually figured out on my own while on hold for 20 minutes to speak to a "technical person". And then my session on the computer expired. Then I tried again and it said it's not due for renewal. So I guess it went through. I signed up for email reminders for driver's and health cards now. Don't want this to happen again. In May 2020 (during the height of COVID) my husband got his notice of renewal (well, 2 months before). I told him he could just do it online... which of course meant that I do it for him. But I did not get a notice for October 2020. Here it is almost October 2021 and I haven't received a notice for this year either. The Service Ontario centres are open now, but I guess they're just not caught up enough on the computer end of things. So having to pay for two years is another ding I don't need. I don't know why I didn't think of it. Why no one in our household didn't notice my way expired sticker. If the police had stopped me I wouldn't have been charged but I would have immediately gone on line to get a new sticker. Thankful that they wouldn't charge us, but wish they would still stop and remind. But then... I don't go out much so when was I going to have a cop behind me looking at my license plate sticker? Ah well, it's all good now. I should get my new sticker by the end of the week.

Covid didn't stop Florida from doing their renewal stuff. As far as we know, neither the DMV or the tag and title office closed at all. They were considered an "esetinal service" so stayed on top of things. My husband and I renewed ours two months early, because we bought a new van and they transfered the tag over.

We totally shut down here in Ontario for at least 3 months. The employees were still working remotely but the only way to renew anything was online. And that was if you remembered or your reminder happened to get processed before the lock down. But we were allowed to go around with expired plates without being charged but encouraged to renew online. I just never thought about it.

I know I got a renewal notice for my photo ID card but as the centres were closed, I let it slide. I guess I should wait a bit for the backlog to clear off?

It's so quick and easy to do it online. We don't have to get our pictures taken every renewal anymore so my last license and health card were also renewed online. They used my previous photo. I guess when you get to a certain age....
